Mess GUI

Desktop interface for the Mess benchmark

Configure benchmark runs, generate bandwidth-latency curves and inspect results from a desktop application. Mess GUI uses the same benchmark engine as the command line.

What’s new in Mess 2.1

Downloads

Choose the package for your operating system and processor architecture.

Choose your operating system below.

Linux

Suggested

x86-64

Debian package (.deb)

Installation & requirements

Install the downloaded .deb package on Debian or Ubuntu and open Mess Benchmark. Prepare a C++17 toolchain and Git, and configure a supported bandwidth-counter backend.

Measurements depend on the counters available on your processor and the permissions provided by your operating system.

macOS

Suggested

Apple Silicon

Disk image (.dmg)

Installation & requirements

Open the disk image and move Mess Benchmark into Applications. Install Xcode Command Line Tools and Git before setting up the benchmark.

Bandwidth measurement requires an M-series Mac. Native IOReport measurement needs no additional counter driver; Intel Macs have no macOS bandwidth-counter backend.

Windows

Suggested

Intel / AMD x86-64

Installer (.exe)

Installation & requirements

Run the installer and open Mess Benchmark as Administrator for bandwidth measurements. Install the MSYS2 UCRT64 toolchain, CMake and Ninja. WebView2 is supplied by the installer if needed.

Install Intel VTune, Intel client IMC tooling or AMD uProf for your CPU. Native Windows driver and benchmark-curve validation remains pending.

Hardware counters determine which measurements your system supports. --bind, --inst-lat and --add-counters are unavailable on macOS and Windows.

Full platform requirements

Getting started

  1. Install Mess GUI. Choose the package for your platform and prepare the build tools and counter backend listed above.
  2. Choose your Mess checkout. Select “Locate existing Mess” for an existing checkout, or “Install Mess” to clone the official repository. The GUI then compiles the benchmark.
  3. Run a measurement. Start with Quick Evaluation, or launch full bandwidth-latency curves with Run Mess. Inspect your results and export them for further analysis.

Source code and documentation

Mess 2.1 also adds NVIDIA GPU bandwidth-latency curves through --gpu. GPU measurements require the NVIDIA driver and CUDA Toolkit 12.6+ with nvcc and CUPTI.
